Roger worked his way north, walking through snow that was becoming deeper by the minute. “My old bones better get a coat of toughness,” he whispered under his breath, using two cold hands to shield his face from a powerful, icy wind. “The main road is north of the town…seems to me, unless the dead man was driving a tank…he would have parked his vehicle north of town near the large boulder to keep it out of sight.”

Darkness and snow surrounded Roger. Visibility was dangerously poor, forcing the man to constantly keep looking down in order to just see his legs. Roger understood the land he was walking on enough to work his way through the dark night, but deep down he knew how easy it would be to lose his bearings and end up wandering around in a lost circle until he froze to death. The desert landscape wasn’t friendly or kind and was constantly changing due to powerful windstorms that altered the face of the desert within hours. A friendly land marker could be changed into a treacherous enemy in no time at all.

“Have to keep north,” Roger whispered through chattering teeth as he forced his legs to keep working through the deep snow.

The snow continued to fall harder and heavier, pounding Roger with cold hands while turning the landscape into a confusing white maze. All he was able to see was darkness and all he was able to feel was the snow and winds. “This is hopeless!” Roger stopped walking, raised his head, and searched the night with worried eyes. “I ain’t gonna find my way to the boulders…I have to turn back.” A cowboy knew when to turn back and Roger was a tough old cowboy who knew better than to battle a snowstorm. He drew in a deep breath and turned back to town feeling like a frozen snowman. He walked a few feet, struggling to follow the snow tracks he had made, but it wasn’t long before the wind erased the tacks, forcing Roger to use his gut to navigate his legs. A few minutes later, as if the entire earth had opened up and swallowed him, Roger felt the ground under his feet give way. He let out a loud holler as his body was pulled down into a deep, dark hole in the ground. He landed in an old mining tunnel that had been hidden since the mid-1800s.

Hitting hard, cold dirt, Roger felt his legs nearly break in half. He let out a painful grimace and then began blocking his head from falling dirt. After a minute or two, the falling dirt tapered off. Roger lifted his eyes and saw a dark hole above his head—the top of which would be impossible to reach. “Wouldn’t you know it,” he complained and then hurried to check his legs. “Not broke…reckon I’m alive.” With those words, the man carefully stood up, looked to his right and left, and then glanced up again. “Let’s see…I was walking south…this tunnel seems to be running north and south.
